Pianist Anna Tilbrook, tenor James Gilchrist, the Sacconi Quartet and friends join the BBC at the University of Hull’s Middleton Hall for a Big Chamber Weekend - four concerts celebrating the city’s musical, cultural and political heritage. The four concerts will be presented by Petroc Trelawny and broadcast on Radio 3 in October.
The final concert marks the dark days of WWII and the intensive bombing of the city which caused such devastation. The programme includes songs by John Ireland and Ivor Gurney as well as Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet – itself a depiction of a concentrated bombing raid in Dresden, and Vaughan Williams’ setting of AE Housman’s “On Wenlock Edge”, so synonymous now with wartime.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Caroline Kennedy from the University of Hull who will provide a pre-concert lecture on Hull in the Blitz entitled: ‘Command of the Air - Destruction from Above’.
