OpenCampus Culture Cafe - ‘Hull: Culture, History, Place’
Speaker: Professor David J Starkey, Professor in Maritime History, University of Hull.
William Oliver was a skipper in Hull's distant-water trawl fishery from 1906 to 1939. The daily logs and diaries he kept during that period offer valuable personal insights into this highly significant business, how it changed during one practitioner’s lifetime, and what it was like working aboard a trawler in distant waters, as well as living ashore with a wife and family of ten children. Drawing upon these fascinating sources, this talk not only sheds light on William Oliver's career in an extreme occupation, but also reveals much about life in Hull during the first half of the twentieth century.
