We are delighted to open our spring 2017 season with this illustrious duo. As part of their glowing international careers, Fenella teaches violin to many of our students, and Libby has regularly supported our students as accompanist to their exams for a number of years, so they are ideal artists to open this quarter’s city-wide programme of events themed around ‘Made in Hull’.
This programme has been designed especially for our Once Contemporary, Always Contemporary series. Fenella herself commissioned ‘5 Pieces after Sibelius’ to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius in 2015. The work is paired with the composer’s own ‘5 pieces’, and the programme is rounded off by Pärt’s mesmerising Fratres.
With playing described in the press as 'unforgettable' and 'a wonder', violinist Fenella Humphreys enjoys a busy career combining chamber music and solo work. She has broadcast for the BBC, Classic FM, and German, Canadian, Australian and Korean radio and TV.
'Violinist Fenella Humphreys responds to its elegiac reflection and technical display at top flight level, offering emotional depth and weight of tone' Five Stars and Orchestral Choice - BBC Music Magazine
Libby Burgess collaborates regularly with some of the finest singers and instrumentalists of her generation. She regularly performs in the UK's major concert halls and festivals and appears on BBC Radio 3. Libby is Artistic Director of New Paths, a major new festival of concerts and education events in Beverley, which took place for the first time in April 2016.
'There is no disputing the warm, sensitive pianism of Libby Burgess' Stephen Pritchard, Observer
Libby and Fenella will perform a programme which harks back to folk and traditional music, including works by Bartok and Stravinsky, and features Beethoven's beautiful, ethereal Sonata no. 10 in G major.
