Foxe (new commission, 2017)
Two-time Juno Award winner and Steinway artist David Braid, composer of the film Born to Be Blue, presents music from his latest collaboration with one of the UK's freshest and most innovative ensembles in the second of two exciting instalments.
This unique and fascinating musical journey includes improvised work that will captivate, touch and thrill in equal measure.
This programme includes exciting commissions created in collaboration with Canadian Steinway Artist David Braid, the composer for the film Born to be Blue. The music connects ancient, folk, classical and improvised techniques in dramatic ways that are exciting to audiences of all ages.
Our main new commission is inspired by the Arctic adventures of Hull-born pioneer Captain Luke Foxe, a 17th-century mariner of Hull Trinity House. Foxe’s accounts describe magical encounters with ‘sea unicorns’ and other fauna, the discovery of 500 graves of an unrecognized race, his chance meeting with rival Captain James, and the naming of a land associated with Arctic giants.
Followed by 2.15pm workshop. All welcome (no musical experience necessary). Come and develop a new composition (The Pioneers) for touring in the UK and the Canadian Subarctic/Arctic. The work will ultimately be recorded at the Steinway Hall, New York.
