Heritage Open Days 2018 Talks: William Wilberforce, the ‘Great Change’, and the Hull connection, Dr David Bagchi
Ten years ago, the motion picture biopic Amazing Grace set out to tell the story of Wilberforce’s spiritual enlightenment and its impact on his long campaign in Parliament against the slave trade. But the film omitted a vital factor: the Hull connection. In this talk, David Bagchi, Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Hull, attempts to put Hull back in the picture.
He looks at the crucial role played by the Hull schoolmaster Isaac Milner to what Wilberforce called his ‘Great Change’, and locates the particular version of Christianity which they both espoused (Anglican evangelicalism) in the context of the wider intellectual movements of their age, including the Enlightenment, the Evangelical Revival, and revolutionary ideas from France, with a focus on both Milner’s theological writings and Wilberforce’s now little-read bestseller, A Practical View (1797).
