A modern day adaptation of “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. After the murder of a child by a stray bullet, a group of women organise against the ongoing violence.
Chi-Raq is a modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. After the murder of a child by a stray bullet, a group of women led by a gang-leader’s beautiful girlfriend Lysistrata organise against the on-going violence in Chicago’s Southside by pledging to withhold sexual contact from their partners. In doing so, they create a movement that challenges the nature of race, sex and violence in America and around the world.
Won three awards including Best Independent Film at African-American Film Critics Association. Nominated for seven prizes at the Black Reel Awards, winning for Best Actress.
Chi-Raq is rated 15. Visit the BBFC website for full details (may include plot spoilers).
“A Molotov cocktail of laughs and anger, Chi-Raq is a powerful state of a nation address. The result is the most creatively exciting Lee has been in a decade.” Olly Richards, Empire Magazine
“Spike Lee’s latest is an extraordinary confection: a satire written in verse, set to rap, gospel and hip-hop music, based on an Ancient Greek play moved to Chi-Raq, a nickname for present-day Chicago.” Kate Muir, The Times
7:30pm Introductions, trailer reel and short film (10-15 mins). Main feature, Chi-Raq.
