FERENS FINE ART LECTURES 2017
Arranged with the Government Art Collection, in connection with the exhibition from their collection, An Eyeful of Wry, showing in the Brynmor Jones Library 20 October – 26 November 2017
Mel Brimfield is a London-based artist and curator with a particular concern with Performance Art. Her contribution to the Ferens Fine Art lecture series is part performative lecture and part artist's talk. It has formed the introduction to the series This is Performance Art, a sprawling multi-part project that spawned 4’.33” (a specially modified Pianola that performs a celebration of Roger Bannister) which is a dominant feature of our exhibition, An Eyeful of Wry.
This is Performance Art takes a skewed and tangled romp through the already vexed historiography of performance art, simultaneously revealing and inventing a rich history of collaboration between artists, dancers, political activists and comedians. Her interdisciplinary performances, exhibitions and publications featuring brass bands, gymnasts, jugglers and socialist magicians have previously been presented at venues including the Whitechapel Gallery, Henry Moore Institute, and Camden Arts Centre.
