OpenCampus Reading Group - Victorian Secrets:
Silas Marner by George Eliot - hosted by Karen Turner
'Victorian Secrets' aims to bring together some of the best-loved with the lesser-read fiction of the Victorian era. Using examples from across different genres and sub-genres, it proves participants with a cross-section of 19th-century literature that shows just how varied, lively, and readable Victorian fiction can be.
George Eliot is better known for The Mill on the Floss, but her third novel, Silas Marner, stands out for its realist tone and complex, sophisticated reaction to contemporary issues. The novel has been adapted several times, including a 1985 version starring Patsy Kensit and the 1994 Steve Martin film A Simple Twist of Fate.
