Watching the Transnational Detectives: a series of screenings of and conversation around your favourite international TV dramas.
The ‘Watching the Transnational Detectives’ project is a funded study into understanding the UK’s fascination with foreign language crime dramas. We are aiming to find out what you the audience really think and feel when you watch these shows.
Spiral; Deutschland ‘83; Inspector Montalbano: international crime dramas like these routinely draw large numbers of British television viewers even though the lead detectives don’t always speak in English. So whilst we’re viewing our favourite 9 pm crime show, what else are we discovering about the country we’re seeing and the people we’re hearing on screen? Does our viewing influence our attitudes about languages and even encourage us to learn a new language? Come and tell us your views whilst revisiting some of the best episodes of some much-loved series.
Inspector Falke is a gritty German crime drama following Inspector Thorsten Falke, a stubborn Hamburg detective, and taking us into the heart of contemporary German society.
Come along and enjoy again a favourite episode of this much-loved series and join in the post-show discussion, let us know your views on the show, the cultural stereotypes it promotes, and its use of language.
Doors: 5.30pm for refreshments. Screening begins at 6 pm.
