City of Culture brings star musicians to University of Hull

Xuefei Yang, a multi award-winning performer who was the first Chinese guitarist to gain international recognition, will help launch a season of stunning classical concerts at the University of Hull’s Middleton Hall.

Part of the University’s City of Culture events programme, the concerts will cover everything from Bach to Beethoven, Sibelius to Simaku, and beyond.

The first few weeks’ highlights include:

Thursday 9 February

One of the world's finest classical guitarists, Xuefei Yang was the first internationally recognised Chinese guitarist on the global stage. She will perform a programme including Bach's Lute Suite and two Chinese pieces she has arranged herself.

Thursday 16 February

Roderick Williams and Christopher Glynn perform Schubert’s Winter Journey, one of the greatest of all song cycles, in a new English translation.

Thursday 23 February

The New London Chamber Ensemble is a wind quintet with a difference. They will perform a programme of arrangements of popular works by Mozart, Faure and Debussy. Find out more.

Thursday 2 March

Ensemble DeNOTE explores the roots of 18th century chamber music in an innovative way with ‘Bach, Beethoven and Virtuosity’.

As well as the concert series, the performers will also be giving their time to deliver masterclasses for University of Hull students, which are open to the public to come and watch.

The programme continues throughout 2017 and will be hosted in the University’s stunning Middleton Hall, which recently underwent a £9.5m to become a fantastic arts and concert venue.

Dr Simon Desbruslais, Lecturer in Music and Performance Coordinator, said: “This programme has been devised to cover all tastes of classical music, including well-known names such as Mozart and Beethoven alongside more recent works which give audiences a broad and rich concert music experience.

“Thanks to the University’s role in Hull UK City of Culture we have been able to attract incredibly high profile performers to the fantastic new surroundings of Middleton Hall. It is a real treat for all music lovers.”
